When you talk about SEO metrics, you focus mainly on the demographics. You emphasize more on questions like, who is visiting your site, which location they belong and what are their interests? Answers to these questions help you make informed decisions about your online business campaigns which are tailored according to your customers’ interests. Dwell time is one such crucial SEO factors that enable your site to rank high in the search engines.

What is Dwell Time?

Dwell time is that metric which runs through the search engine results pages or SERPs. It is the total time you spend reading those web pages before you go back to the search engine to check the other results. You might have done this innumerable times, most likely. Dwell time is that brief moment you take to evaluate the website you just clicked to visit. It either immediately provided you the required answer or was a complete failure so that you press the back button instantly. If you make use of search engines then you are racking up dwell time without even knowing about it. The significance of this metric to a search engine is obvious as more is the time users spend on the page they clicked to visit, higher will be the possibility that page satisfied their needs.

Some Misconceptions about Dwell Time

Dwell time is one of the metrics which often gets referenced in articles, conference presentations and on social media but sadly, it is misunderstood by some professionals in the SEO community. Here are some points which will clear the misconceptions about dwell time:

  • Dwell Time Is NOT Bounce Rate

A bounce occurs when a user views only one webpage and leaves your website.

  • Dwell Time Is NOT Average Time on Page

Average time on page means the average amount of time the users spend on a single webpage.

  • Dwell Time Is NOT Session Duration

Session duration is a metric that measures how long the users spend on your website.

  • Dwell Time Is NOT Click-Through Rate

Click-through rate is the total percentage of users who clicked the link to your page out of all the users who saw that SERP.

  • Dwell Time Is NOT RankBrain

RankBrain is a metric which gathers data from the interactions of users with the search results, not the interaction they have with the piece of content.

Hopefully, you might have understood by now what dwell time is and what it is not. You cannot measure dwell time with any third-party tool. Only the search engines are capable of accessing dwell time.

Benefits of Tracking Dwell Time

  • Dwell time can show the marketers if their pages are capturing user attention and satisfying the needs of browsers. This metric has the potential to guide you on what to avoid and what to include on the web pages.
  • It can lead to clues about enhancing UX. For instance, if your webpage has slow loading time, it is reflected in dwell time metrics. The users might exit your webpage when it takes too long to load.
  • Dwell time is correlated with other important metrics such as bounce rate and time on site. By improving your dwell time, you can decrease your bounce rate and increase the average time on site. Thus, this metric can lead to important decisions you take for your site in order to improve your ranking.

How to Increase Dwell Time?

Here are some factors that can help to improve the dwell time:

  • Focus on quality web content by including in-depth articles and blogs which tell everything about the topics
  • Use interactive slides, videos and showcase studies
  • Adopt better tactics of user engagement
  • Use logical internal linking
  • Focus on online presence

You know, there is nothing much clarified about which metrics do search engines take into consideration but if there is a metric which it is considering to qualify your content quality then it will be dwell time. Thus, dwell time is one of the most essential metrics which need to be tracked when it comes to SEO or content sharing on social network.

When you wish to see your website on the top ranking of Google, you have to face the reality of hard-hitting online competition. Search engine optimization (SEO) is an unceasing race to stay ahead of the competitors. To win this race, you must constantly improve your website and observe the optimization activities of your competitors.

So, what is the secret to winning at Search engine optimization in 2020?

If you want to outrank your competition, here, in this blog, we are discussing some important tips that you can consider:

  1. 1. Focus on creating content for your website

Whether you are focussing on Search engine optimization, pay-per-click or other such digital marketing strategies to attract potential visitors to your website, both the quality as well as the number of your content matters. Fresh content on your site will make your site more appealing for the search engines as well as for the visitors who read your pages. Good quality content may lead to viral sharing that can increase the external backlinks which point at your website, thus, further boosting your SEO.

  1. 2. Keywords should be targeted strategically

While planning the content writing for your business, pay proper attention to the keywords that you are targeting. To know which keywords are effective and which can be ceded to the competitors, you can look at the traffic data for various search queries with the help of Google Analytics or Webmaster Tools program. You may also use advanced tools such as Raven Tools to determine the keywords which are producing the most conversions.

  1. 3. Be up-to-date about best SEO practices and latest SEO news

It is a field that is constantly changing. If you catch hold of a new SEO technique or an emerging trend before your competitors, you will be capable of cementing your lead in the natural search results. Thus, it is advised to monitor SEO news on the major blogs and websites to keep updated about the latest trends and techniques in Search Engine Optimization. If you find any major changes in SEO best practices, you can take appropriate action right away and prevent your website from falling behind in the search ranking.

4. Keep Track of your competitors’ backlink profile

Along with monitoring your own site’s backlink profiles to avert any negative SEO attacks, you must also keep a close eye on the backlinks your competitors are building. This will help you in identifying potential linking partners for your website and find any new linking strategies which your competitors might be using to beat you.

  1. 5. Monitor the on-site SEO activities of your competitors

You must monitor your competitors’ on-site SEO efforts. If any of your competitors change their SEO activities, there can be one of two scenarios; they may have found some new ways to optimize their webpages in the search results or they are simply updating their webpages in response to a penalty given by the search engines.

Either way, it will be a great idea to keep your eye on the competitors’ tag structures, keyword-optimized headers and other such SEO activities.

  1. 6. Technical Audit

Errors can be troublesome no matter how and where you encounter them. Your users would never appreciate it if you let your site go due to some petty error.

Some common issues on your site can be:

  • Broken links
  • Broken redirects
  • Broken images
  • Missing meta tags
  • Server errors
  • Crawling issues
  • Indexing issues
  • Dead-end pages
  • Orphaned pages
  • Schema mark-up errors

You cannot keep an eye on your website every hour, thus, some fully automated tools are available for such tasks. They can be used to detect the common technical issues with your website and then you can simply fix them.

Whether it’s out-working your competitors or simply persisting longer than them, you can follow the above SEO tips and make this next decade one of your biggest triumphs.

Google recently announced on its Twitter handle that a new January 2020 core update is rolling out. They regularly refine their systems and subsystems that work to determine the user’s intent and offer appropriate result pages. This broad core update does not target something specific which the webmasters can improve upon like the “Speed Update”. It will have a significant impact on all search results on a global scale.

To explain how Google Algorithm (Core) update work, the following analogy can be given:

You can imagine that you made a list of the top 100 movies in 2014. After a few years in 2019, you refresh that list. It is sure to change. Some new movies which never existed before may be included in this list. You may also need to reassess some films and comprehend that some of the movies deserve a higher position on the list. The list changes accordingly and films that were previously on the higher rank move down. They are not bad but simply more deserving films will come before them. With this in mind, there will be nothing wrong with the web pages that drop in their rankings following a core algorithm update. They are only reassessed against their contents which have been published since their last update, or the contents that have been previously overlooked.

Significance of January 2020 Core Update

Every time Google is updating its search algorithms, it may indicate that your website can do better or worse in the search results. Having a precise idea of when Google Algorithm update happens makes can enable you to understand whether there was something that you might have changed on your site or Google changed its core ranking algorithm. Since Google released its January 2020 core ranking update, you must keep track of your website rankings and analytics. Some widely noticeable effects can be expected that may include gains or drops in search rankings, therefore, paying attention to your website rankings in the coming days and weeks is essential.

What are the measures to recover if a core update hits your website?

Unlike the updates which targeted specific things, this core update can tweak the values of everything. Your website will be weighed against the competing websites relevant to the queries made by the users. The reason your website’s ranking dropped could be entirely different in comparison to the reason your competitor’s site increased or decreased in rankings. To make it simple, Google has not clarified the exact reasons or measures of recovery from core update hits because there is a different answer for all websites and queries.

What is the best SEO advice for conquering core updates?

To conquer the core Google Algorithm updates, the best advice would be to keep focusing on:

  • Quality content
  • User intent
  • Clean architecture
  • Google’s guidelines

Last but not least, always keep improving your website even if you have reached the first position in the search results because your competitor on rank 2 is not going to stop.

Google has been updating its search engine strategies to prove more user friendly and SEO friendly. Google Search console has been the top tool unleashed by Google and it is the redefined version of Web Master Tools. It has the added features in the name of Search Analytics and Links to Your Site for helping SEOs more.

Google’s ‘more help docs’ and ‘support resources’ are useful in fixing the crawling errors in search console.

How to Fix Crawl Errors?

Concentrate on the following factors

Infrastructure

Good habits and practice preventative maintenance and periodic spot checks on crawl errors will help you keep the crawl errors under control. Ignoring such small errors will take a big form in future.

Lay out of crawl errors within search console

Search console has two divisions: Site errors and URL errors.  Site errors are different from page errors. Site errors can be more damaging with their power to damage site’s overall usability.
You can access crawl errors quickly from the dashboard. Your dashboard gives you a preview of the site with three important management tools – crawl errors, search analytics and sitemaps.

More about site errors

Site errors affect the site entirely. Skipping these errors will cause catastrophe to the site. You can find these errors in the Google dashboard for the last 90 days. Checking the site errors every day is good and if you miss a day, you may land in some serious trouble. Setting up alerts will make the matter easy for you.

DNS errors

Domain Name System (DMS) are the foremost issues. Suppose the Googlebot faces DNS error, it will not connect with your site through a DNS look up issue or DNS timeout issue.  Fetch and Render, ISUP.me, Web-sniffer.set is some of the tools helping you fix the DNS errors.

Server errors

Server errors make your server take too long a time to respond. This happens when your site gets overloaded with much traffic. ‘Fetch as Google’ is the tool for you to check whether Google returns the content of your homepage without problem. Use ‘Google search console help’ to find specific server errors.

Robots errors

Fixing robots.txt file error is fairly important if you change new content daily. Use a ‘server header checker’ to check whether your file is returning a 404 or 200 error.

URL Errors

URL errors affect specific pages on the site. Search Console will show you URL errors per desktop, smart phone and feature phone. It is better to mark all errors fixed and check back upon them a few days after.

Soft 404, 404 errors are also commonly found on the sites. One more problem is ‘access denied’ and ‘not allowed’. The Screaming Frog SEO Spider helps you fix redirect errors.

Fix crawling errors on time to avoid huge damages to your site.

Your domain name speaks for your brand and stands as a main reason for attracting traffic to your site. Choosing a proper domain name is not that hard if you follow these basic factors that decide the success of your domain name.
How to Choose a Domain Name? Read on.
1. Brandability

Your domain name should be brandable and catchy at the very first sight. Suppose you choose a name with hyphens and symbols, it does not work well. Also, choose a name which has no generic keyword but is unique and self advertising.
2. Pronounceability

Mind remembers words it can pronounce and associate with things easily so that it will not forget at once. This is called processing fluency of the mind which is what is required for your domain name. People should be able to say out the name without struggle so that they will remember it well and click on it when they need something related to it.
3. Short names

Short names are advantageous as when you type them, you get them fully on social network platforms; the URL is not cut off and thus your name stands as it is without being compressed.
4. Using .com

.com is the way to make you familiar with   the people who are not tech savvy and need some common terms to understand domain names. What you need is good ROI and conversions and if these things come by using certain old fashioned ones like .com, nothing wrong.
5. Avoiding names that are similar to yet other companies or trademarks

You should not infringe upon the names that are already in existence or are the trademarks of some existing sites. Seek solicitations from your lawyer in such cases so that you will not enter troubled waters.
6. Intuitive domain names

Your domain name should induce conjecture in the user mind as to what it refers to and what could be the possible product or service your domain offers. On reading the name, the user should be able to guess what it talks about and whether it will suit his requirement.
7. Keyword inclusion is not a must

Keyword mention in the name is good but it should not be over emphasized as it may cause negative associations in the minds of the readers.
8. Modifying domain name

Suppose you are not able to get your domain name as per your wish, you can modify it.
So, you are ready with how to select website name. Keep going!

3. World’s information through the Knowledge Graph

Putting world’s information all together and making it accessible to the users has been a mission of Google over a period of time. Google’s Knowledge Graph serves this propose .Knowledge Graph enhances search engine’s search results with semantic search information that is collected from various sources lie Wikipedia,Wikidata, and the CIA world Factbook. All webmasters have probably known about Google Penguin, the latest update by Google. The famous search engine, Google rolled out Panda update on April 19th of this year to target sites having low quality content. Followed by this on April 24th, 2012 Google Penguin was launched.

The very main purpose of both these launches is, to give most relevant results for Google users. On looking about Google Penguin,

  • Penguin focuses the sites which are overly optimized (Spam) and penalizes it.
  • Don’t be panicky. You need not worry when your site is well SEO optimized, not having any unnatural or irrelevant links.
  • Also make sure that your site follows all the latest quality guidelines of Google.

Now let’s look on what steps should be taken if a site is penalized by Google Penguin.

  • If your site has unnatural links then monitor the backlinks of the site. And remove the links which are irrelevant to the site, avoid link-exchange. Excessive link acquisition in short period of time is also the reason for the hit by Penguin.
  • Few weeks before the launch of Google Penguin, Google has already warned some of its webmasters stating to check the quality guidelines and to update their sites accordingly.
  • You might have noticed the same in your Google webmasters account, if your site was under observe by the search engine.

After rectifying the errors you can directly recommend Google to reconsider your site. Fill in all possible information in the description so that it makes clear that you are working to rectify the errors of the website.
